“Something needs to change,” I told my wife. One year ago I was working a high stress executive job at Experian, and I was double-timing caring for my high-needs, special needs daughter. I am a highly effective person, but I was burning the candle at both ends.
I didn’t need someone to coach me to try harder. I needed to change my circumstances.
That scene’s playing out in coaching practices everywhere. Something’s shifted in the way clients show up, and it isn’t because they’ve lost their ambition. The data backs this up. It has real implications for how you build and price your offers.
The Burnout Numbers Are Worse Than You Think
Start with this: 72% of U.S. employees now face moderate to very high stress at work. That’s a six-year high according to the latest Aflac WorkForces Report. That isn’t a slow-news-day statistic. It means nearly three out of every four people you work with walk into your program already stretched past capacity.
It isn’t just knowledge workers. 65% of working parents reported burnout in a 2024 study published in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care. That number matters if any part of your client base is parenting while building a career or business. Gen Z, now entering their late twenties, reports the highest burnout rates in the workforce.
That stress translates to how clients show up: canceled calls, delayed responses, and the "I know what to do, I just can't seem to do it" loop. If you’re only looking at their calendar or strategy, you’re missing the actual constraint.
What this means for your practice: The default client walking through your door isn’t operating at baseline. Programs built for a well-rested, highly resourced client are built for a client who doesn’t exist anymore.
I suggest reframing it. Burnout isn’t tiredness, and it isn’t a discipline gap. It’s dorsal vagal shutdown. The nervous system forces a hard stop to protect itself. When a client goes flat or gets "stuck," their body likely pulled the emergency brake long before their mind caught up. It’s why coaching as nervous system support is a real framework: structured coaching reduces burnout and increases vitality in leaders working through chronic stress.
The reframe that changes everything: Your job isn’t to push harder against a client’s resistance. It’s to help them regulate first so the motivation they have has somewhere to go.
This isn’t just a client-care question; it’s a business model question. The coaching industry trends for this year are clear. Coaches promising the "fastest" transformation are losing ground to those who promise a specific outcome for a specific client. Generalist positioning is a liability.
The market’s splitting into two tiers: AI-assisted commodity coaching and premium, deeply specialized human coaching. Staying in the vague middle is where margins disappear.
Part of this comes down to pricing. Current life coaching pricing breakdown data shows a 3-4x gap between what specialized coaches charge and what generalists charge. The difference isn’t credentials; it’s clarity. If you can’t name exactly who you serve and what outcome you produce, you can’t justify a fixed fee. You’re left competing on hours instead of results.
Vague positioning is a pricing problem in disguise: and it’s becoming a retention problem too. A burned-out client can’t finish a program that assumes they have bandwidth they don’t have. They quit, refund, or ghost. That shows up as a marketing problem when it’s actually an offer-design problem.
What to Build Instead: The Sustainable, Outcome-Based Offer
Many coaching boundary issues don't come from difficult clients.
They come from unclear expectations.
Before working together, make sure clients understand:
How to contact you
When you'll respond
What support is included
What support is not included
When expectations are clear from the beginning, misunderstandings become far less common.
None of this means lowering your standards or prices. It means building an offer your actual client, the stressed, depleted one, can complete. Make these four shifts this quarter:
Narrow the promise. Pick one client and one outcome. A program that tries to serve everyone’s stress ends up regulating no one.
Price for the outcome, not the hours. Package pricing tied to a result gives clients permission to pace themselves without feeling like they’re wasting your time or their money.
Build in recovery, not just momentum. Titrate the pace. Small, integratable steps beat aggressive sprints for a maxed-out nervous system.
Make sustainable the selling point, not the caveat. Say it in your marketing. Clients are looking for the coach who won’t ask them to hustle harder.
The coaches who adjust now, before it’s obvious to everyone, are the ones who’ll be positioned as the sustainable option when the industry catches up. That isn’t a small advantage. It’s the whole game.
